Design

The St. Helena Sovereign features a beautiful shield with heraldic elements of England, Scotland, and Ireland. The spade-shaped shield sits on a bed of Tutor roses and is surrounded by the inscription DIRIGE DEUS GRESSUS MEOS – MAY GOD DIRECT MY STEPS.

Below the shield, you’ll find an illustration of Saint George slaying the dragon.

The Royal Arms of England shows three lions, representing the three areas of England, Normandy, and Aquitaine. The lion represents bravery and valor. Scotland is represented by its coat of arms, which dates back to the 12th century. Ireland is featured with its  royal coat of arms – the stringed Argent, which is a gold harp with silver strings.

The obverse of the Sovereign shows an effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II.

The Gold Sovereign is official legal tender of Saint Helena.
